What’s the Buzz? Word-of-Mouth Marketing for Libraries

Sponsored by Novelist/NextReads. Starts: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 2 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

Whether you want to promote new programs or keep patrons updated on longstanding services, word-of-mouth marketing is the ticket to build awareness in your community and get people talking about your library in positive terms. Word-of-mouth marketing (WOM) offers your institution and staff a low-cost way to identify and harness social networks that can be used to spread the library’s message and service offerings.

Panelists include:

Peggy Barber, Library Communication Strategies Inc., Chicago, IL. Leading library word-of-mouth marketing expert Barber will discuss the traditional marketing practices versus neomarketing, and tell attendees why it is time to get passionate about “selling” your library and its services. Find out what word-of-mouth marketing is, why you should care, and start putting together an action plan!

Ann McDonald, Library Marketing Associate, Glen Ellyn Public Library, Glen Ellyn, IL. In 2006, Ann took on the newly created position of library marketing associate which came with no handbook, and more importantly, no budget! Using WOM techniques learned from Library Communications Strategies, McDonald will share with attendees how she was able to generate a 375% increase in the use of the library’s NoveList database through creativity and passion, and without spending a lot of money.

Katie Klossner, Community Relations Manager, Douglas County Libraries, Douglas County, CO. By blending word-of-mouth marketing with other strategies like social networking, push technologies, and embedding, Douglas County Libraries (DCL) have created a complete and high impact library marketing strategy. Over 80 percent of Douglas County households have at least one active library card, and the library has an approval rating among local residents of 93 percent. Klossner will review the marketing practices that have made DCL so successful in reaching the Douglas County community.

Moderator: Duncan Smith, Product Manager/Creator of NoveList.
