Librarian II, B-2 or Librarian III, B-3, Philippine Specialist, Asia Collection, position number 86271, UHM Library Serv, (Manoa), non-tenure track, .50 FTE, general funds, available 02/08. Duties: Provide professional librarian support to the reference, collection development and bibliographic instruction activities of the Asia Collection, particularly related to material about the Philippines. Work with the faculty and students at the University of Hawaii who study and research the Philippines. Close contact is maintained with faculty who teach Philippine-related subjects. Provide professional reference service at the Asia Collection reference desk as scheduled and responds to questions and requests for information and research assistance from
faculty, students, and the general public. Offer specialized bibliographic instruction to students in Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, Philippine Studies, and others with needs for such instruction.
Collection development responsibilities include examining newly published materials in all formats related to the Philippines in humanities and social sciences subject areas and making decisions regarding which publications to purchase and make available for the library. Work with Philippine publishers and the Library of Congress Southeast Asia Overseas Office and is knowledgeable about publishing trends in the Philippines. Work locally with the Asia Collections
Southeast Asia Specialist and nationally with other Philippine and Southeast Asia specialists as a participant in consortia. Expected to be familiar with recent developments in information technology, should be competent in web page development and maintenance, and knowledgeable about digitization and its application to libraries.
Minimum qualifications: Librarian II: ALA accredited MLS. Excellent English-language oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with English-language research materials about the Philippines.
Familiarity with one or more Philippine languages, as evidenced by coursework. Librarian III: All of the above and at least 3 years of post-MLS experience in a research library. 24 post-baccalaureate credits in an Asia-related field. Desirable qualifications: Ability to read and
translate research material in a Philippine language, preferably Filipino or Ilokano. Writing and receiving grants. Experience working in consortia.
Previous reference and bibliographic instructional experiences in a specialized collection. Knowledge of Spanish. Pay range: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
