Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Information Processing Unit, the Collections and Information Processing Section, the Dag Hammarskjold Library, Outreach Division, Department of Public Information, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties: Catalogue complex political, economic and social, as well as scientific and technical materials, especially serials (print and electronic format) that require in-depth analysis of subject matter, provision of original bibliographic description and classification; Revise cataloguing data provided by junior professional and/or General Service Staff; Evaluate adequacy of existing reference tools for bibliographic description; Advise other units and departments seeking expertise in content organization and meta-data; Guide, coach, train and supervise professional and general service staff in the function; Perform other duties as assigned.

Planning and Organizing - Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan and those under his/her supervision. Technological Awareness - In depth knowledge of information sources, including the use of relevant databases, internet services and library sources; Ability to use automated information systems as applied to libraries and/or information networks. Communication - Effective communication skills both oral and written. Teamwork- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in library science, information sciences or related field. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in library work or information network administration. Substantial experience in the area of cataloguing services required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English required; knowledge of additional official UN languages is desirable.
Other Skills
In-depth knowledge of the international cataloguing rules and standards (e.g., AACRII) required. Solid skills to use integrated library management systems required.
